This is the biggest expense when paying for hosting. Every time your page loads graphics, or a surfer downloads a an image this is the data measurement being tracked and typical hosts bill you based on how much bandwidth you use. Optimizing your images to be smaller helps save your bandwidth. Talk to your hosting company of your website for more details. blind link - An thumbnail size image or text that takes the surfer to an unknown location. This is often used to route the surfer to a sponsor in hopes that they subscribe to the site. There are sponsor programs that do allow blind links. Always check with a sponsor before setting up blind links so that your not disqualified from a sponsor program. bulk email - When you use a program to send out more than one email message to a list of recipients you do not know. Sending bulk email can be productive but you risk losing your dial up internet provider. People do report those that send out junk mail (spam) and Internet providers will take action. chat - Refers to a posting board where you type in your posts for the public to read. Live chat refers to interactive conversation in real time. As soon as you type your text in a chat room, others will type text back at you within seconds. Very fast paced form of communicating. click-through program - A choice of sponsor who will pay you for the traffic you send to a designated site that you signed up with. You are given some html code to place in your webpage, so the sponsor can track how many surfers (hits) you sent, as well as report to you via a stat page how much money you have made at any given time. Raw hits are how many surfers were tracked coming to your site (sometimes it could be the same person coming back several times), unique hits are how many different people came to your site (does not count repeat vistors). The important number of the two is the unique hits. console - A tool used by webmasters that use a javascript that opens a window that usually contains a multitude of sponsor ads. A console can be triggered by entering a site, exiting a site or by clicking on a text link or image. A tool used for making money but sometimes annoys the surfer. conversion ratio - Its the ratio of how may people you sent to a sponsor vs. how many of those people purchased a signup for which you will be paid for. Sponsors use this ratio to determine how much they will pay you. For example: If you sent 400 people to a sponsor and 2 people purchased a membership, your conversion ratio is 1:200, meaning your averaging 1 signup for every 200 people you send to a sponsor. cookie cutter site - [Slang for "Turn Key Site"]. It`s a website that has pre-designed graphic pages and layout, a basic website already developed for a webmaster. The site is hosted for free, content is provided etc. The only thing you have to do is market the site and build up the traffic to it. counter - Some html code that is inserted into your web page code to count and track how many people come to your site (raw and unique), statistics on your busiest times on your site, where the traffic came from, how many of your web pages were loaded etc. Great tool to understand your peak and valleys of your traffic so you can tweak your site to improve your stats. Every website needs a counter! dead link - When you click on a link and it returns a 404 page not found error. This means the URL address is no longer in commerce and the URL is useless. If you ever visit a website and note a dead link the webmaster who runs the site would appreciate you letting them know. There is software on the web you can get that will check all your links to make sure none are dead. flame - Angry or hostile form of communication. FPA - Full page ad used by webmasters on free sites to generate income by sending traffic to sponsors. free hosting - To operate a website you have to have a hosting company to load your pages and create the link between your site and the surfer. Free hosting means you do not have to pay for any bandwidth, and you have no operational costs. In exchange, your site will be required to have some form of advertising that benefits the company hosting you. Some free hosting companies are equipped to handle the loads, so shop around carefully and make sure your not going to be "turtle" slow which is a turn off to surfers. Some hosting companies are not as obnoxious as others about advertising for them, research your options and choose the one that offers you the most (speed, control of your site, and many have free content too). hotlinking - This is when another webmaster paths a link to content they do not own. Linking to another websites graphics or images is usually without permission and causes an increase in the cost of bandwidth to an un-suspecting webmaster. This is a form of stealing. icq - A program you can download to your computer and install on your desktop. The most popular tool used for webmasters who want to stay in touch privately with other people. The software allows you to send brief messages over the internet, and alerts you when people you have on your ICQ list log onto the web, allows for 1 on 1 private chat. It is like paging system in real time. A must have tool. Download this at The ICQ website> lurker - A webmaster that wants to remain silent on chat boards. Prefers to read the posts but does not reply in open public forums. They are the silent readers. Never judge a webmaster posting board by the amount of posts they have, there is a higher percentage of lurkers who read that cannot be accounted for except for stats on a counter program. mines - The mines are where you massage the domain registration database when prospecting for domain names. The most common one is known as "internic". mousetrap - A term used by both sponsors and webmasters to note a clever trap to increase the amount of exposure to the surfer in hopes they can be converted to money at a sponsor site. Popup consoles are one form of mousetrap, shifting the surfer in circle jerks between sites is another example of a mousetrap. Basically its any clever technique used to squeeze to increase the odds your surfers will signup with a sponsor. newbie - A new webmaster starting out in their career on the web, a beginner. partnership program - A sponsor program that splits a percentage of the money you made for that sponsor, and if that surfer renews their membership with the sponsor, you will be paid a commission on that surfer every month they remain with the sponsor. Shop around, some sponsors deduct money from chargebacks. password Trader - A webmaster that gets a hold of passwords that are valid at membership sites. Often used to entice traffic to their site so that they can convert it to to sponsors etc. picpost - A common used marketing tool to generate traffic to your website. You join a picpost site and you can post teaser images which come from your server. This is a mousetrap to entice a surfer to come to your site to see more. portal site - A portal is a site where people can go to share a common interest. Within the portal is everything they would need pertaining to that interest. proggy - A slang term for "Program". Most commonly used when talking about sponsors or any program that can be used to generate income from your site. reciprocal link - Giving a link back (reciprocating) when another site has give you a link. Its a deal between 2 people to cross promote each others website. shill - Making a post on a chat board with the intent to stage some marketing conversation so as not to be perceived as spam (posting a marketing ad message). spam - Un-solicited email (or marketing ad at a posting board site) that is received from people you do not know trying to sell or inform you about something. Sending spam to try to get traffic to your site is frowned upon and could cost you your dial up connection for abuse. stealth site - A site that is a URL typo error of a popular high traffic`d site. Its sole purpose is to capitalize off of typo traffic meant for another site. For example, if a surfer typed in WWWOPRAH.COM and you owned that typo error domain name, you get the surfer who was looking for www.OPRAH.COM. Table Ad - A square or odd size (not horizontal) banner set inside a table with a text link on the other side of the graphic. thumbnail gallery post (TGP) - A marketing tool to gain traffic where a webmaster can join to post image galleries. Usually a link is required back to the TGP. top list - A marketing tool used to gain more traffic to one`s website. You usually have a button or link on your site, and the more traffic you send to a toplist the higher you are on the listing. You receive traffic back from this listing that other people sent. turn key site - Same name to describe a "Cookie Cutter". It`s a website that has pre-designed graphic pages and layout, a basic website already developed for a webmaster. The site is hosted for free, content is provided etc. The only thing you have to do is market the site and build up the traffic to it. warez - A site or program that has been cracked and does not require a serial number to install and run the program.
